Service as Action: Primary Student Council Visit to Pioneers Park Senior Park

ree

On Tuesday, 2 December, the Primary Student Council led a meaningful Service as Action experience with the Grade 6 class: a visit to Pioneers Park Senior Park to spend time with the 160 elderly residents. This initiative brought together the spirit of community, empathy, and purposeful action that the IB Learner Profile encourages in all students.

In preparation for the visit, students collected donations from the Primary School community. Each senior received a packet of biscuits, thoughtfully prepared and delivered by the Student Council. In addition, toiletries—generously donated by families and the Grade 6 class—were packaged and distributed. These simple yet heartfelt items helped bring comfort to the residents, showing how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

During the visit, students spent time interacting with the elders, getting to know their stories, sharing conversations, and learning from their life experiences. Many students described these moments as highlights of the day, as the seniors welcomed the chance to talk, laugh, and share memories. This experience encouraged learners to become open-minded communicators, appreciating perspectives from a different generation and culture.

Various students put on performances, such as reading a story, performing a short drama skit, singing, and dancing.

This visit was more than just a service activity—it was a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, respect, and human connection. Students demonstrated the Caring attribute of the IB Learner Profile by showing empathy and consideration for the needs of the elderly. They also acted as Principled individuals, taking responsibility for contributing positively to their community.

The trip to Pioneers Park Senior Park was a deeply special event for both the students and the residents. It strengthened the school’s commitment to meaningful community engagement and proved how purposeful action can build stronger, more connected communities. The Primary Student Council hopes to continue developing initiatives that support and uplift others while nurturing learners’ growth as global citizens.

The grade 6s, as well as the Primary Student Council, would like to thank everyone who donated towards this event! It made someone’s day!
