ABOUT US
Windhoek International School (WIS) was founded in December 1990, the year in which Namibia achieved independence. We opened our doors to our first students in January 1991 and in 2021, we proudly celebrated our 30th birthday.
The school was founded to serve the needs of the children of the international community in Namibia and of those Namibian families who are attracted by the unique international character of the school and who share its philosophy and objectives. It is a not-for-profit entity governed by a volunteer Board.
We moved to our present spacious campus in 1994 and have steadily added facilities. We have also grown. What began as a small school in 1991 today enrols more than 430 students aged from 3 to 18 and from around 50 different countries. We believe in keeping a low student-to-teacher ratio, and our warm and caring WIS staff consists of 90 teachers, administrators, and other educational specialists from Namibia and approximately 20 other countries.
We have been an IB World school since the 1990s, offering the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma. We are proud of our IB Continuum status, in fact, WIS is the only IB school in Namibia. With the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma, our students are following internationally recognised courses with external validation.
The school is a member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Students graduate with a USA High School Diploma and matriculate into top national, regional and global universities of their choice.
The language of instruction is English and we also offer French, German and Portuguese. Students are encouraged to grow or maintain their multilingualism and mother tongue while attending WIS.
WIS students are active in a wide range of clubs and after school activities. The mascot is the Fish Eagle, and our sports teams and individual athletes compete in a number of leagues and tournaments in Namibia and regionally.
The school is proud of its inclusive ethos. We see diversity as a strength and WIS is without a doubt the most diverse community of learners in Windhoek.
