Dear Parents,
Thank you for attending our recent parent coffee morning about our new learning management system, Toddle.
We're excited to announce our next PYP parent coffee morning, which will focus on our refined approach to assessment in the Primary Years Programme: Mastery Assessment. We invite you to join us to learn more about this student-centred approach designed to give every child the best chance for success.
What is Mastery Assessment?
Mastery Assessment is an approach that focuses on ensuring students have a deep understanding and ability to apply key concepts and skills before moving on to more advanced material. Rather than simply covering a wide range of content, this method emphasises the importance of students achieving a high level of proficiency in foundational knowledge and skills.
Key features of Mastery Assessment include:
1. Clear learning objectives for each lesson or unit
2. Regular assessment of student understanding
3. Targeted support for individual students or small groups
4. Flexible pacing to allow students the time they need to achieve mastery
5. Opportunities for reassessment if needed
How does Mastery Assessment benefit your child?
This approach is designed to:
Ensure a solid foundation of knowledge and skills
Provide personalised support based on individual needs
Allow students to progress at their own pace
Encourage a growth mindset and resilience in learning
Foster a deeper understanding of concepts rather than surface-level knowledge
Collaboration between Teachers, Students, and Parents
Mastery Assessment involves all stakeholders in the learning process:
Teachers regularly assess student progress and provide targeted instruction
Students engage in self-assessment and reflection on their learning
Parents are kept informed of their child's progress through regular updates and have opportunities to support learning at home
We believe this collaborative approach will lead to improved outcomes and a more positive learning experience for all our students.
We look forward to sharing more details about Mastery Assessment and answering your questions at our upcoming coffee morning. We value your involvement crucial in making this approach a success, and we're excited to partner with you in supporting your child's educational journey.
Date and time of the coffee morning: September 30th 2024 at 7.30 am

Marcelle van Leenen | Primary School Principal
