Windhoek International School's Primary Music Teacher and Arts Head of Department, Ms Michelle Du Preez, recently performed with the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra to popular acclaim. The Oryx caught up with Ms Michelle to learn more about what it is like to perform on the national stage.
Ms Michelle, everyone is talking about the success of the latest Namibian National Symphony Orchestra concert. Could you tell our community members what goes into such a performance?
Preparing for this performance involved 38 hours of rehearsals — across two weekends as well as three-hour weekday rehearsals — with an incredible group of musicians and singers. I was fortunate to rehearse and perform alongside my fellow woodwind players, working together to bring Haydn’s Nelson Mass to life. There is so much work that happens before stepping onto the stage, and it was incredibly rewarding to see all those hours of rehearsing, listening, refining, and working together come to life in two wonderful performances.
What made this performance especially special for you?
What made this performance even more special was sharing the stage with my husband. I performed on the oboe while he performed on the bassoon as well as singing tenor. Being able to make music together in these different roles made the experience even more meaningful for both of us.
The response from the audience was incredible, with the performances receiving two standing ovations. A special thank you to my colleagues and fellow community members who came to support the performance. Seeing familiar faces in the audience made the experience even more meaningful, and we truly appreciated your support.
My involvement with the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra (NNSO) has given me some wonderful musical experiences, and performing Haydn’s Nelson Mass was particularly special.
How can WIS community members become aware of upcoming musical events?
The NNSO provides musicians with wonderful opportunities throughout the year, including the Baroque Festival and Concerto Festival, as well as other orchestral performances. I feel very fortunate to be part of this musical community and to continue performing alongside such talented musicians.
