Great opportunities for our students

With the university application season in full swing, universities and institutions are actively doing outreach to present their institution’s programmes and opportunities. For our students, these are opportunities to inform themselves about different countries, institutions, programmes and things that can help them with their decision about their journey post-secondary school. This past week we had the honour of welcoming different institutions at WIS – not only for university, but also handson opportunities to foster real-life skills. 

On Wednesday and Thursday, Warrior Driving School visited WIS to give our Grade 11 and 12 students an opportunity to “change a tyre”. This sounds so  trivial, but – particularly in a country like ours, where you can get stuck in the middle of nowhere – changing a tyre is a valuable skill you need.

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to learn more about Yale Young African Scholars and Yale Young Global Scholars. Amaeka Effiong presented these two programmes to our Grade 10-12 students. Engaging in these opportunities gives young people great insight into their post-secondary school lives and prepares them for applications to universities as well as makes them “visible” in the admissions landscape of universities. 

Today - Friday - Calvin University  visited WIS and Abby Zwart, Senior International Admissions Counsellor from Calvin University. She had a session with our Grade 11 and 12 students about the university and also shared some useful information about university life. It was a proud moment to see our students engaged and asking very meaningful questions that dig deeper than just getting straightforward answers but that create a deep thinking atmosphere in the conversation with the representative. Kudos to WIS and our students for engaging meaningfully in these conversations.
