Meet Uta Becker, our new and founding Flexible Learning Pathway Teacher!

Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?

I am Uta Becker. I was born and raised in Windhoek. I am married to my wonderful husband, Hanno. Since I have been a student in grade 2, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. The wish to become a teacher has developed into a lifelong passion. Over the years my special field of interest has turned towards Special Needs Education.

Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?

As I am a Special Educational Needs Expert, my philosophy of education is deeply rooted in the principles of special needs education. I am passionate about supporting students with diverse learning needs. Designing individual educational plans, selecting streamlined content, choosing tailored methods and techniques to promote academic, social and emotional growth, gives me so much joy. Every child, despite their disabilities or learning difficulties, has the ability to learn. It is my profound privilege to accompany students on their individual journey of developing and shaping their unique strengths and skills. School is not only a place where learning is facilitated, it is also a place where connections are formed, and joy, confidence and a sense of belonging are cultivated. A school that caters to the unique needs of a child creates a learning environment of acceptance and inclusion.

People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?

I studied at the University of Bamberg in Germany for the pathway “Realschule” (mid-school qualification in preparing students for vocational training) and completed my examination in Educational Psychology. On my return to Windhoek, I enrolled at the University of Namibia to complete a bachelor’s degree in English and History with the additional core subject Inclusive Education. In addition, I have a diploma qualification completed via Frome, Somerset United Kingdom for Special Educational Needs Teaching. Since 2009, I have gained experience in teaching diverse learning disabilities and difficulties. I have worked in various schools in Namibia, as well as Germany, and took every opportunity to attend workshops and engage in further training in the field of special needs education linked to the Federal State of Germany or South Africa. In recent years, I have supported and assisted parents and their children with severe to profound learning difficulties and disabilities towards accomplishing school enrollment.

What do you do when you aren't teaching?

I thoroughly enjoy gardening. I take delight in creating new garden corners and rearranging my potted plants. Watching leaves and flowers grow will always remain fascinating to me. Recently, I have discovered the thrill of baking - Christmas cookies in particular. This is why I introduced Christmas in July at home. Having two Christmases in the year is such fun and loaded with cookies.

Why did you choose WIS?

I could say WIS chose me. One day at lunchtime I received a phone call from Windhoek International School telling me about a young student who needs individualized support. Without hesitation I said YES. I have been collaborating with WIS since 2020. Windhoek International School impresses me with their openness to accommodate unique diagnoses. I am delighted and grateful that Windhoek International School has chosen me as their new Flexible Learning Pathway Teacher.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

I love research work and enjoy analyzing systems and structures. Linking research to educational principles is very exciting.
