Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?
Hi everyone! I am so excited to be a part of the WIS family. I will be joining the school with my wife (the new PYP 5 teacher) and our two amazing sons. We will be moving to Windhoek from Cape Town, South Africa.
Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?
I really love connection. It is so important for me to be able to help my students identify and understand the links between themselves, the various skills and concepts we are covering in class and the actual world that we find ourselves living in. To help facilitate these synoptic links, I pride myself on getting to know my students individually, to better support them on their unique journies.
People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?
I studied a Bachelor of Social Science degree at the University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. After that I did my PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education) at the same university. I began my teaching career in Durban, South Africa before getting married and teaching with my wife in Cairo, Egypt, for three years. We then moved back to South Africa but relocated to Cape Town where I have been teaching at an international school for the past seven and a half years. I now have 15 years of teaching experience.
What do you do when you aren't teaching?
Most of the time (when I’m not teaching) you can find me hanging out with my family. My sons are still young and so we spend a lot of time going to the beach and the park, playing with toy cars and having dance parties at home. I also love to jog and would love to get back into some team sports like touch rugby, ultimate frisbee or social football (soccer).
Why did you choose WIS?
After being in Cape Town for almost 8 years, our family decided it was time for a new adventure. WIS seemed like the perfect place to develop my teaching skills further and a great place to raise our kids. We are so excited to make new friends, and to learn and grow in such a fantastic community.
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
I love getting involved in almost anything at school. I’ve sung a Grinch song in a primary school production, dressed up for a high school lip-sync battle and most recently got a bucket of freezing water dunked on me when our staff trivia team lost to some students (I’m pretty sure it was rigged though). Needless to say, I don’t take myself too seriously and love to help out anywhere I can.
