Learning extended beyond the classroom

A special aspect of who we are at WIS and  that lots of our children at WIS engage in outside of the classroom is extra or co-curricular work.

I want to mention and celebrate a few of these activities in this short article, but there are so many more extra and co-curricular activities that could be mentioned. It is exciting to see how students shine in these situations and how they make WIS and their parents proud.

On Thursday, I visited Krumhuk to get some insight into the weekly visit one of our Grade 9 students does to work at Krumhuk with their staff. He works in the garden and what he wishes to get from this internship - in his own words - “Biodynamic farming is fascinating because it goes even beyond organic and non-GMO; it is a holistic approach that uses the forces of nature and brings plants and animals together in a rejection of current monocultural norms, and I hope to understand how some of these practices can be applied on a much larger scale to create a future of sustainable food production.” This is an amazing insight from a student who plans to pursue some of this in his future career.

On the 19th of June, 5 of our Grade 11 students will be attending an Outreach Day of the AviaDev Summit. It is a  premier networking summit for airline and service providers in the world who meet in Africa and expand their network. With this summit comes an opportunity for budding aviators to come meet established aviators and ask more questions on the industry.

( https://www.aviationdevelop.com/ ). Our students will have the opportunity to meet flight instructors from the Namibian Aviation Training Academy (NATA), https://nata.co.na/, Pilots from airlines, Airline Executives,  Air Traffic Controllers, and Engineers from aircraft manufacturing companies such as Boeing and Airbus. This is an outstanding opportunity for our students to start their networking efforts and explore this industry.

On the 6th of June, two Grade 11 students attended the “Adventure into Citizenship” event at the Rotary Club. This annual event is an interactive seminar with presentations by highly respected professionals, and general discussions about matters of hope and citizenship are taking place.

The feedback from students who attended these events is overwhelmingly positive and gives much opportunity to connect, network and learn outside of the classroom. These opportunities then enable young people to become compassionate and take leadership in their communities.

There are many more opportunities that our students at WIS participate in that manifest our WIS Principles - People, Purpose, Ownership, Excellence, Creativity, Sustainability - and give our young people an excellent opportunity to become leaders and drivers of change in our society.

I am proud, WIS is proud, of young people making a difference in their community and turning our principles into action in such an amazing way.
