A group of 12 Grade 8 WIS students have just completed their Service in Action project. They decided to give back to the community by painting an old kindergarten building. They saw through this whole project, from sourcing funding generously offered by a local NGO, Umbrella Initiatives, and then taking two trips to the kindergarten in Otjomuise to measure out, calculating the surface area and hence amount of paint required. We then got a nice discount from Neo Paints for the paint and materials and then the students went back for the painting day.
It was a truly rewarding experience where students learned and practiced new skills involving measuring, mathematical calculations, preparing the walls, filling holes, painting and a host of other useful skills such as teamwork, collaboration and problem solving. It was inspiring to watch these students develop skills of empathy as they realised how important their project would be to the teachers and learners using this space. Smiley, the big boss at Smiley’s kindergarten, was extremely happy and grateful indeed!
Here are a selection of photos showing the preparation, painting and completion of this project.
