Grade 5´s Are Spreading Kindness Across the School!

Dear WIS Community,

I want to share something truly special that's been happening in the Primary at WIS. Our assemblies bring us together, but our Grade 5s have taken that spirit of community and run with it in the most heartwarming way.  The Grade 5 Peer Support Programme is part of the Grade 5 Leadership unit,  and involves our oldest primary students in teaching lessons on kindness, friendship, and resilience to their younger peers.

Here's how the programme works:

1. Grade 5 students form small teams and prepare structured lessons on social-emotional topics.

2. Each week, these teams teach groups of students from various primary grades.

3. The groups rotate regularly, allowing for interaction across all grade levels.

The program serves several purposes:

- It provides practical leadership experience for our Grade 5 students.

- It reinforces important social-emotional concepts for younger students.

- It creates opportunities for cross-grade interactions, strengthening our school community.

We've observed that this peer-to-peer teaching model encourages engagement from both the student teachers and their younger classmates. The Grade 5 students take their responsibilities very seriously, often surprising us with their insight and creativity in lesson planning and delivery!

For parents, this program offers a unique opportunity to discuss leadership and social-emotional learning with your children. Whether your child is in Grade 5 or a younger grade, they're likely to have interesting perspectives on these peer-led lessons, so please ask them about it!

The Grade 5 team has put considerable effort into developing and implementing this program. Their work aligns with our school's commitment to fostering student leadership and building a strong community. Thanks to the grade 5 team and their students!

Warm regards,

Marcelle van Leenen | Primary School Principal
