Five Weeks to Go: Finishing with Heart

As we move into the final five weeks of the school year, our campus begins to carry a unique mixture of emotions. There is excitement and pride in how far we have come, anticipation for holidays and new beginnings, but also fatigue, uncertainty, and sometimes even sadness as routines, relationships, and familiar spaces begin to shift.
In many ways, the end of a school year mirrors the very heart of the PYP journey. Learning is not simply about reaching an endpoint; it is about growth, reflection, connection, and transformation. Throughout the year, our students and teachers have inquired, taken risks, collaborated, persevered, and adapted. Now, as we approach the finish line, we are also navigating the emotional side of change.
For students, this time of year can bring many “highs and lows.” Some learners thrive on the excitement of transition and celebration, while others may feel anxious about moving to a new grade, new teachers, or changing friendships. Younger children, especially, can struggle to articulate these emotions clearly. What may look like tiredness, frustration, distraction, or heightened energy is often connected to the uncertainty that naturally comes with endings and change.
Teachers experience many of these same feelings. The final stretch of the year is both rewarding and demanding. There is joy in seeing student growth and achievement, but also the challenge of maintaining routines, supporting emotional needs, completing assessments, and preparing for transition - all while managing our own energy levels after a long and busy year.
This is where the strength of our learning community becomes so important.
One of the most powerful aspects of the PYP is the belief that learning happens in relationship with others. We are not individuals working in isolation; we are a collaborative community that supports one another through both success and challenge. During this time of year, we see our learner profile attributes come to life in especially meaningful ways.
We see students being caring as they encourage classmates who may be nervous about change. We see teachers and teams being communicators and open-minded as they work together to support every child. We see resilience and reflection as learners recognise how much they have grown throughout the year. We also see the importance of being balanced; acknowledging that wellbeing, rest, connection, and emotional support are essential parts of learning.
As adults, we often focus on “getting through” the final weeks, but there is also value in slowing down enough to notice the moments that matter. The laughter during collaborative inquiries, the confidence a child suddenly shows, the friendships that have formed, and the countless small victories that together tell the story of a year’s growth.
The finish line is important, but so too is how we arrive there.
Over the coming weeks, our classrooms will continue to be places of learning, reflection, celebration, and care. There will be moments of excitement and moments of challenge, and both are a natural part of any meaningful journey. As a community, we will continue to support one another with empathy, patience, and understanding as we navigate this season together.
In the PYP, we often remind students that learning is a lifelong journey. Endings can feel emotional because they matter. They remind us that something meaningful has taken place. At the same time, every ending also creates space for new opportunities, new relationships, and new growth ahead.
As we approach the final weeks of the year, may we continue to move forward together; reflective, caring, and connected as a community.
