When does the future start? When do I need to make plans for the future?

This past week WIS was very fortunate to be able to meet Karlis Brandelis who talked to us about his circumnavigation of the planet. Being able to afford our community opportunities like this, gives us the privilege to show our WIS Principles in “real life”. When people take the decision to venture into an unknown adventure, they do so with confidence and determination. This is something we want to support and nurture here at WIS.
Education is not the mere acquisition of knowledge, not just sitting in a classroom and learning about Math and Science, English, Foreign Languages, Design and Humanities. Education happens most effectively when we learn by doing, by experiencing and by taking calculated risks to achieve goals that we aspire to achieve.
The inspirational talk of Karlis clearly demonstrated how we create our futures by taking charge of our aspirations and our dreams and goals in life.
This weekend we celebrate International Day. This is another opportunity where we can create real life situations to have our children and young adults take on responsibilities to contribute to this beautiful day in our community - through the dances that were prepared, through cooking traditional food for the country that they represent, through researching and finding out about the country their class chose. These are opportunities to “create” the future, because these opportunities make it possible for our kids to experience the diverse beauty of our planet and our people
In the next week, our Grade 10 and 12 students will leave school to start their final preparations for the IGCSE and IBDP examinations (more about that next week). Once again, the focus here is fully on the future and what might happen, what can happen or what should happen.

The future is with us all the time. We strive, engage and aspire to become more caring, more knowledgeable, more successful, more proficient - so that we can reach our potential and achieve what we aspire to achieve. This is the beauty of humankind - an everlasting thirst to learn, grow and move forward.
Respectfully
Maggie Reiff
