This week, I came across an image on LinkedIn which reminded me again that there is a much bigger responsibility we have in education - as parents and as educators in a VUCA world - a world that is characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.
Our planet is in danger because of so many things that we humans are responsible for - climate change, wars, corrupt regimes, and politics that are more self-enriching than looking after the people that are meant to be served.
It is critical, therefore, that our education prioritises educating young people who have the ability and will to actively make a difference in our world - for all of humanity, but most importantly for our planet. There currently is a conversation starting at WIS on how we can be more sustainable. How can we use containers and our tuck shop more sustainably? How can we ensure that energy is used sustainably?
The first step in this regard is pushing awareness towards this. Making it non-optional to use plastic bottles and containers and cutlery that is made out of plastic. Are we not all aware? Then why do we do so little? Because everything we do is our responsibility. Our choices, our actions, our well-being, our words and our future on this planet depend on the individual first and foremost. Only if each individual takes responsibility, can we collectively be responsible for the future of our planet.
My plea to each one who reads this today is to take responsibility for the world around you - the people, the surroundings, nature, the city - even in the small everyday decisions you make. A conscious action - even a little one - like turning off the tap when you don’t need it running - can contribute to this world becoming more sustainable.
