Our PYP Community in Action

 Dear WIS Community,

Walking across the campus this morning, I couldn't help but notice (and smile!) at the learning unfolding around me. I want to share these moments with you, as they show how our PYP community brings learning to life every day.

Grade 2 Explores Innovation

Our Grade 2 assembly demonstrated a clear understanding of their unit "How Inventions Changed the Way We Live." Students presented a well-researched play about Stone Age tools and are developing detailed dioramas to show technological progress. One student summed up their learning effectively: "These advancements helped communities grow and develop further." Their presentations showed both knowledge and growing confidence in public speaking.

Grade 4 Celebrates Cultural Heritage

In Grade 4, students shared their learning through performances of historically significant Southern African songs. This was part of their investigation into how "cultural diversity in Southern Africa is expressed through various forms of art, music, dance and storytelling." Their unit connects local cultural traditions with broader historical understanding.

Connecting with Local Resources

Meanwhile, Grade 3 students visited the National Earth Science Museum to support their unit on "How People Depend on Earth's Resources." This field trip helped students connect classroom learning about Namibia's resources with real examples from their environment.

Our Curriculum Development Journey

Last year, our teaching team reviewed our curriculum to strengthen its cultural responsiveness and inclusivity. We enhanced our units to include more historical events and local context. Today's learning experiences showed this planning in action, with students actively engaging with both global and local perspectives.

Building Understanding Together

What might look like just another Friday to an outsider is, to me, a testament to the heart of our community. In every classroom, our students are:

  • Asking thoughtful questions about their world

  • Sharing different perspectives with respect and curiosity

  • Making connections between their lives and global issues

  • Developing the critical thinking skills they'll need for tomorrow

  • Learning about their heritage and others' stories

To our parent community: Behind each project, performance, and discovery is a team of dedicated teachers who plan meaningful experiences for your children. When you see your child excited about a new discovery or eager to share what they've learned, know that this is the result of careful, creative planning and our shared commitment to their growth.

The PYP  approach cultivates a generation of globally minded individuals, equipped with the knowledge, empathy, and critical thinking skills to navigate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly interconnected world!

I welcome your observations about your child's learning journey. How are they sharing their discoveries at home?

Warmly,

Marcelle van Leenen | Primary School Principal
