NaDEET trip

Written by Alex Smith and Sarthak Kumar

The Grade 8s went to NaDEET Centre from 18th to 22nd September, 2023. The NaDEET Centre is located in the NamibRand Nature Reserve in the southwestern part of the Namib desert.

The aim of the programme at NaDEET is to teach people sustainability. They did this by teaching us how to limit our eco-footprint by using bucket showers, cups for brushing our teeth, a long drop toilet, solar cookers, and solar panels. They also taught us about the importance of the S.D.Gs (Sustainable Development Goals) and how we must strive to accomplish these goals to reduce our social and environmental problems. At NaDEET they made us feel that we can achieve these goals. We felt like we had an impact on the environment.

The students were divided into 6 houses known by their colour. The six houses were Red, Green, Yellow, Orange, Black, and Blue. Every day was divided into different activities, the activities were stargazing, dune boarding, family-style cooking, dune walk, and studying Namibian species in the desert. There were also many games such as quizzes, guess the Problem, and H.I.P.P.O scenarios.

Overall, the NaDEET trip was amazing. It was educational and fun at the same time. We’re glad that we got an opportunity to have this unique learning experience.
