During the start of December, I received incredible news: I was chosen as one of six students to participate in our school’s Global Alliance program. My destination? The International School of Western Australia (ISWA) in Perth. The excitement was overwhelming, and I couldn't wait to embark on this adventure. However, I faced an early challenge as my visa arrived a week later than the intended travel date from myself and Amanda. It affected the plans a bit meaning I had to fly solo. This was my first time travelling alone, which was both daunting and thrilling.
The following day, I explored a local mall and met Amanda and her host family, Syndi. My first day at ISWA soon arrived, and I was introduced to my buddies, Caleb and Ethan. Caleb would be my second host family. I also met many other students, teachers, and the principal, making me feel part of the school community.
One surprising aspect of ISWA was the schoolwork. I was placed in a grade 10 class and I noticed that much of their curriculum, especially in Maths and English, covered topics we had already completed in Grade 9. This allowed me to manage my schoolwork from both WIS and ISWA efficiently.
Beyond academics, I experienced a wealth of exciting activities. I snorkeled at Rottnest Island, where I saw adorable quokkas, attended an AFL game, sailed on the Swan River, and visited Caversham Wildlife Park, home to koalas, kangaroos, and more. These adventures were highlights of my stay in Perth.
Living with three different host families presented its challenges but also offered unique opportunities to connect with diverse people and cultures. This aspect of the programme enriched my experience immeasurably.
Overall, this exchange was an incredible journey filled with unforgettable memories and personal growth. I’m immensely grateful for the experience and encourage others to seize such opportunities. To anyone considering applying for the Global Exchange program next year, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, immerse yourself in different cultures, and understand what school life is like on another continent. To be eligible, remember to maintain good attendance, achieve strong grades, and demonstrate responsibility.
