Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?
Hello! I am so excited to be joining the WIS community. I hail from Washington state in the U.S., and have been teaching high school science for 10 years, mostly abroad. I will be coming from Abu Dhabi, UAE with my spouse David, and son Calvin, who is 5 years old.
Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?
Sure can! For me, it’s really all about connection. I prioritize relationship-building, as the resulting connections made with students such an important foundation upon which to build a successful year of teaching and learning. I also strive to help kids see the connections between chemistry and other subject areas, as well as connections to their lives outside the classroom. Science is everywhere, and one of my goals daily is to help students find it.
People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?
I left my Washington home to go to university in Iowa, at a tiny liberal arts school called Graceland University. I double-majored in Chemistry & Biology, and just because I could, also minored in History. I once made essence of skunk in Organic Chemistry class, a memory I cherish to this day. I veered from my original plan of medical school, and instead joined the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone. Long story short, I found out I quite enjoyed teaching, and went to the University of Washington for a Masters in Teaching. Since then, I have worked at schools in Washington, Tanzania, and Abu Dhabi, UAE.
What do you do when you aren't teaching?
Everyone has a ‘thing’, and my thing is trivia—you can bet that David and I will be seeking out quiz nights in Windhoek once we get settled. Along with Calvin, we enjoy bike rides, camping, board games, ultimate frisbee, and of course traveling. We are looking forward to roadtripping and exploring the region.
Why did you choose WIS?
I have been living in Abu Dhabi for 7 years, and was looking for a change—notably one where my family could more easily enjoy nature and the outdoors, and Namibia fit the bill. I am also looking forward to being at a smaller school with a more close-knit community feel. Every conversation I’ve had with folks at WIS has made me feel welcomed, and I am confident that myself and my family will find what we are looking for at WIS!
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
I will happily challenge you to a game of Scrabble, and I love a good science pun. Periodically.
