At WIS we approach learning as more than just learning in the classroom. Learning is meant to be connected to the real world and young people learn best if what they learn in the classroom is transferred to the world outside the classroom.
That is why our students participate in the Model United Nations, the Junior City Council and as our latest activity, our Grade 10 peer counsellors will be visiting the Bernhard Nordkamp Centre on Wednesday’s to support and give guidance to some of the children there. Earlier in the school year, a group of WIS students participated in the JOMUN conference in Johannesburg. This experience is an excellent opportunity to apply the skills our students practise in their afterschool activity and emulate the United Nations General Assembly. Two weeks ago, a group of WIS students participated in the MUN Namibia (MUNNAM) conference in Windhoek and did really well. We want to acknowledge our teachers who guide our students in these activities and serve as outstanding motivators and supporters so that our students confidently and kindly participate in these opportunities.
Our senior students also participate in the Junior Council of the City of Windhoek. Through this activity, they learn about challenges the city faces and support vulnerable people in the city. Once again, they gain valuable real life experiences and skills through these activities.
All these activities recognise our students’ connections to serving their community and society at large. The experiences open young minds and make them aware and care for what goes on around them - in their community, but also globally - through being exposed to different political systems and challenges in countries across the world.
As we are nearing our reaccreditation in March 2025, where we will reflect on our Definition of Learning as well as Learner Engagement and Learning Spaces, reviewing these initiatives and the impact they make on our young people in an excellent way to connect students’ formal learning environments with their learning experiences outside of the classroom in the wider context of their lives.
WIS Definition of Learning:
“Learning at WIS is a journey of inquiring, discovering, and experimenting while developing understanding and acquiring new knowledge, skills and concepts. In the process, the learner constructs meaning by making connections and applying these in daily life situations. The learner realises individual potential through continued reflection and exploration. The learning environment is multi-sensory, collaborative, and enjoyable and encourages international-mindedness.”
