Junior City Council Reaches Out: Making a Difference for the Elderly

Our 2 WIS representatives, Mathew Varghese (Grade 12) and Tapiwanashe Murwira (Grade 11), participated in the annual Old Age Home Junior City Council project.

This year the Junior City Council decided to support the elderly residents of the Katutura Old Age Home, through an inspiring demonstration of community spirit in the form of a fun walk. The fun walk, hosted on the 31st of August, united students, teachers and parents from high schools across Windhoek for a common cause. Showing appreciation for the elderly men and women in the community.

The event saw participants purchasing tickets to join the walk, resulting in an impressive 11,923 Namibian dollars raised. This heartwarming effort didn't stop there. On the 11th of October, the Junior City Councillors, Councillor Sam Nujoma, accompanied by City of Windhoek staff, media representatives, and the residents of the old age home, gathered at the Katutura Old Age Home for a special handover ceremony.

With the funds raised, the Junior City Council purchased groceries and toiletries to donate to the elderly. The gesture was met with heartfelt gratitude, underscoring the impact that unity and compassion can have within a community. One of the residents even gave a heartfelt thanks in the form of a song.

A few words from Matthew and Tapiwa

Matthew: I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Windhoek Junior City Council. Particularly, I enjoyed interacting with my fellow peers to create initiatives that address the pressing concerns of Namibians. With regards to the Old Age Home Junior City Council project, it was a challenging project but it was a successful project for my peers and I. In addition to helping out the elderly people of Namibia, the project also taught me how to be more creative in approaching project work and how to be more organized when planning for the Old Age Home project. Overall, I am excited for the Windhoek Junior City Council’s future events.

Tapiwa: I am very grateful for being a part of the Junior City Council because it has given me a platform to collaborate with my fellow peers, and learn what it means to give back to the community. This project took time, effort and dedication to plan. From the many words and even songs of thanks we received from the Old Age Home residents, I can proudly say that the reach out project was a success. I look forward to doing even more projects like this for the 2025-2026 Junior City Council.
