Dear WIS Community,
In the Primary Years Programme, we understand leadership as an important concept to understand and develop in young learners. The IB mission is about creating individuals who understand their role in our interconnected world, who are knowledgeable, and develop confidence and capabilities to transform understanding into action.
As part of their unit of inquiry on leadership, our Grade 5 students have embraced leadership opportunities with remarkable enthusiasm and maturity. They are learning that leadership is important because it helps communities, groups, and individuals work together to achieve goals and solve problems. Leadership helps people bring their strengths together. Leaders inspire action, guide others towards solutions, and create an environment where everyone can contribute. They are learning leadership is about service, collaboration, and positive impact.
Our Grade 5 students have put these principles into practice through various initiatives, including whole school peer-teaching sessions focused on essential life skills like kindness, resilience, and friendship. During events like sports day, they carry banners, document memories and make sure their peers stay hydrated and energised, seeing needs and taking initiative to meet them.
This morning during assembly the Grade 5 students were recognized for their leadership with special leadership hats, so that they can easily be identified on the playground, ready to help and support their fellow students.
These experiences connect directly to the core principles of the PYP framework. By taking on leadership roles, students develop:
Agency: They learn to make informed choices and take responsible action
Self-efficacy: Success in leadership roles builds confidence in their abilities
Systems thinking: They understand how their actions contribute to the larger school community
Global perspective: They recognize leadership as a tool for positive change in our interconnected world
Perhaps most importantly, these leadership opportunities are laying the foundation for lifelong learning. As our students discover their capacity to influence positive change, they're developing skills and mindsets that will serve them—and their future communities—well beyond their primary years.
Warm regards,
Marcelle van Leenen | Primary School Principal
