As part of the IBDP curriculum, our Grade 11 German Foreign Language students explored the theme “Our Planet, Environment, Recycling, and Climate Change.” To deepen their understanding, we visited the Zero Waste Shop in Klein Windhoek, where they had the opportunity to apply their German skills in a real-world setting.

During the visit, we organized and filmed an interview with the shop’s owner, Mrs. Brigitte Reissner. The students engaged actively, asking insightful questions about sustainability and waste reduction, while Mrs Reissner enthusiastically shared her knowledge and experiences.

She explained the principles behind a waste-free lifestyle, emphasizing how reducing plastic consumption directly benefits the environment. She also provided practical insights into sustainable shopping habits, inspiring the students to rethink their own daily choices.

The visit not only strengthened the students’ German vocabulary on environmental topics but also encouraged us to reflect on our habits and the impact of small, mindful changes. It was an eye-opening and inspiring experience that brought classroom learning to life!

This is the Way - Levin & Danik

The Grade 11 German class had a fantastic time during our trip to the Zero Waste Shop. It was both highly fascinating and educational, providing us with valuable insights into the reduction and avoidance of waste, especially plastic, and the effects if not done enough. For instance, did you know that we consume microplastics every week through groundwater? On top of that, we ingest the equivalent of an entire credit card’s worth of plastic each week through food. This newly gained deeper understanding of these issues has inspired us to consider how we can contribute to a better future for us and the generations after us.

We also learned of the troubles of running a business in this sector, such as the difficulty of finding new, eco-friendly products and the unwillingness of manufacturers to sell in large batches rather than in small proportioned amounts.

We highly encourage you to visit the Zero Waste Store and make sure to not forget to bring your own containers, such as glass jars, Tupperware, or reusable bags made from recycled materials.
