From the Principal's Desk: Navigating the Digital Landscape with Our Students

The digital world is a fact of life. While technology offers numerous educational and social opportunities, WIS students, like those all around the world, are experiencing a significant increase in cyberbullying and misuse of social media platforms over the past year.

Recent trends, such as the increased use of VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), Discord (a communication platform with age restrictions of 13+), and TikTok (with age restrictions of 13+), highlight the need for ongoing conversations about online safety.

We are committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students, both online and offline. To this end, we invite you to attend an Informative Parent Night next Wednesday evening at 5:00 in the staff work room next to room 46.

This event will feature a co-presentation by our school counselor and myself. We will discuss:

  • Digital Citizenship: Exploring responsible online behavior, including cyberbullying prevention, online safety tips, and the appropriate use of technology.

  • Social Media Safety: Discussing age restrictions, privacy settings, and the potential impact of social media on student well-being.

  • The 8th Grade Cell Phone Initiative: Learning about the growing trend of delaying cell phone use until 8th grade and exploring the potential benefits of this approach.

  • Addressing Cyberbullying: Understanding how online bullying and unkind behavior can impact student emotional and academic success.

We believe that by working together, we can empower our students to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. A simple guide that parents can access is found at Common Sense Media.org

We encourage all parents to attend this important event.

Sincerely,

Mr Derrek Berkompas

Middle School Principal
