Christopher Aiff Tournament

Updated: May 15, 2023

Dear Community,

There are three important events happening this weekend. The first is on Saturday, when WIS hosts our annual Christopher Aiff Tournament. Also on Saturday is the Association of Diplomatic Spouses Food and Craft Bazaar at the Windhoek Country Club between 10 am and 2 pm, fundraising for GBV Prevention and Response in Namibia. The third is that Sunday is Mother’s Day! So for this week’s Oryx, I simply wanted to share a touching video and reflection about our former WIS student, Christopher Aiff.

Christopher was a student at WIS from kindergarten all the way through to Grade 12. He graduated in 2009 and headed off to UCT. In August 2011, 3 months shy of his 21st birthday, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (in his knee) and then passed away on the 4th of May 2014 at the age of 24. Chris and his family were active members and staunch supporters of the WIS community, and they still thank WIS for the supportive community it provided in Chris' last days. In his memory, the Christopher Aiff Cup football tournament (he loved his football), was set up with the proceeds going to the Cancer Association of Namibia. I thank Ms. Edwina Rimmington for providing the above text and context for this special tradition held at WIS.

If you would like to get to know Chris a bit more here he is in a video from a series filmed by Justin Baldoni: Meet Christopher, focus on the good | My Last Days

Stories like these give clarity and a sense of priority. So this weekend, let’s give a few extra hugs to those around us, let’s speak with the mother figures in our life, and let’s give an extra expression of care to those around us.

Sincerely,

Ethan Van Drunen

Educational Director
