Dear WIS Community,
A heartfelt welcome to both our new and returning families. I have had many happy responses from students about their first day back at WIS, and I am eager to be part of another year of continued growth and achievements for each and every one of our students.
Part of my role as Primary School Principal involves supporting collaborative teams and their initiatives that drive our school's progress. This week, I had the privilege of participating in some meaningful discussions which I find truly capture the WIS spirit!
During our staff workweek, we placed a strong emphasis on team building and collaboration – values that lie at the core of our school's philosophy, the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Our teachers came together to develop essential agreements for working together and to co-construct goals for learning. This collective effort ensures a harmonious and enriched learning experience for our students, a true embodiment of the PYP ethos of united efforts nurturing growth and learning.
I also joined a meeting in our Physical Education (PE) department, where innovative strategies for our youngest learners in the Early Years are taking shape. In an exciting development, we will be introducing "Veld School" this September. This initiative will integrate nature into our lessons, letting children explore the world of plants and animals while engaging in outdoor activities such as shelter building. We welcome your input as we collaborate with the community to make this a success.
An upcoming highlight is a new after-school activity in the Early Years called "WIS Wiggles: Early Motor Magic!" This engaging program aims to promote movement and play, fostering strength and confidence in our students. Additionally, we're introducing "WIS Play - Little Champs," designed to introduce children to basic sports skills through enjoyable activities.
I also joined the planning of the re-launch of WIS News – a monthly news production entirely led by our students. This venture provides an excellent opportunity for our learners to develop their creativity, leadership, and digital creation skills. This will be supported by Ms. Jolene Nel, our Digital Creation coordinator. Ms. Jolene will guide both teachers and students in navigating media and technology for learning this year.
"Digital Creation" is an important aspect of our educational landscape. It encompasses a range of skills, from designing graphics to crafting stories and videos. Proficiency in digital creation empowers our students to convey narratives, design visuals, and shape digital experiences. Our students will learn how to shape digital content that resonates globally, giving them the power to be creators, not just consumers. |
We will continue to involve you in your child’s education through learning celebrations and parent workshops, please look out for communication on these in your child’s Homeroom Weekly Newsletter shared on Seesaw.
We hope to see you on the Back-to-school night scheduled for the 30th of August! In the meantime, stay safe, happy, and well, and please reach out to us if you have any questions or feedback.
Warm regards,
Marcelle van Leenen
Primary Principal
