Grade 9's take on the Orange River

In a remarkable display of determination, teamwork, and a thirst for adventure, forty WIS Grade 9 students recently completed an unforgettable 70km paddling journey down the Orange River in the South of Namibia.

This successful outdoor education expedition was a testament to the students' resilience, the dedication of our teaching team, and the expertise of our five brilliant Felix Unite Guides. Against the beauty of the region and under the Namibian night sky and the bright, almost full moon, these young adventurers learned valuable life skills, reached their individual and collective goals, and created memories that will last a lifetime. The trip offered students the opportunity to acquire a range of essential life skills: Leadership: As students paddled downstream, they discovered the importance of effective leadership. They learned to make quick decisions, work together as a team, lean in to help classmates and take charge when necessary, fostering leadership qualities that will serve them well in the future. Problem Solving: Navigating the river's twists and turns, overcoming obstacles, and setting up camp in the wilderness all required students to think critically and adapt to ever-changing circumstances. They honed their problem-solving skills and resourcefulness during this incredible journey. Resilience and Self-Reliance: The trip exposed students to the beauty of Namibia, but it also tested their grit. Facing challenging conditions, extreme heat and unpredictable rapids, they learned to embrace discomfort, persevere through adversity, and develop self-reliance.

A HUGE thank you to our Felix Unite Guides - Alaska, Boytjie, Ourie, Eduardo and Lukas. The journey would not have been possible without the support, engagement and professional leadership of this amazing team. Their deep knowledge of the Orange River region and their expertise in teaching paddling, navigating white water and setting up safe and protected camps proved invaluable and so instructive for our students.
