Transforming Dreams into Reality: My Journey with the Global Alliance Program in Australia - Gabriella, Grade 9

Participating in the Global Alliance program has been something I wanted to do since I first heard about it in grade 6 and I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of it. Looking back to my 3 week trip to Australia it was not just about traveling and being able to experience a new country but about personal growth, stepping outside of my comfort zone and learning more about myself.

Before the trip I was both anxious and excited. The thought of being in a completely new environment and surrounded by unfamiliar people was intimidating. Although at the end it was because of the new environment and unfamiliar people that made the experience so meaningful. When I arrived I was already challenged to adapt to the different lifestyle, communicating with new people and navigating life in a different way by using public transport as everyday transportation for example.

One of the most important things I gained from this experience was confidence. Being placed in situations where I had to speak up, make new friends and navigate my way around an unfamiliar environment helped me grow as an individual. At first, it felt uncomfortable but over time once I got out of my bubble I realized how independent and self- assured I have become.

The people I met played a huge part in shaping my experience. Building connections with others from different backgrounds showed me the value in understanding and appreciating different perspectives. Even though we came from different places we were able to share experiences and learn from each other. Making the trip enjoyable and meaningful.

Adding onto personal growth, the exchange program helped me observe and participate in unfamiliar settings. The new interactions and experiences helped open my mind and made me more aware of the diversity in the world which encouraged me to be more open and accepting.

Overall this experience was more than just a trip but also a journey of self discovery. Pushing me to take risks, embrace new challenges and grow as an individual. I returned back home with amazing memories, a new found confidence and independence. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and will carry it with me for the rest of my life.
