One trip to NaDEET, One Step Closer Into Saving Our Environment
By Tia & Scarlett, Grade 8 students
On September 14, both 8th Grade classes went on a trip to NaDEET in order to learn about water conservation and the importance of the ecosystem and the wildlife that supports the needs of humans and other animals. NaDEET maintains the environment by using the least amount of energy, none if possible, by using solar cookers, bucket showers, and strict rules when around the wildlife.
NaDEET a non profit organisation that invites schools, youths, and educators to participate in unique activities that teach others how to not waste water, resources, and energy. It is an award winning educational organisation that teaches people sustainable ways of living and finding the balance between humans and the environment.
At NaDeet, people receive the opportunity to learn how to be sustainable by learning about what solar energy, cookers, and ovens are and how to use them, how to save water, and how to use less energy and emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. NaDEET is inspired by the SDG Goals, and spreads awareness about them every time a new school visits.
The Grade 8 classes learned about water reservation, energy conservation, and environmental protection through activities that taught the importance of maintaining our resources and what would happen in a few years and to future generations if we didn’t maintain them. These activities included cooking using solar cookers and ovens, which releases zero Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, dune walks, which taught them about the different types of animals and plants that live in dune areas, and quizzes , which helped the students retain the information they learned. One 8th Grade student reported, “I actually learned a lot about protecting the environment!” which shows how the activities can leave a good impact on our everyday lives.
Multiple children across many different schools have learned about the SDG Goals and the importance of our environment through art, cooking, science, and physical education. Trips taken to NaDEET were made memorable by activities instead of lessons, which helps students remember what they learned better and apply it to their everyday lives. NaDEET provides multiple learning opportunities, while still allowing students to have fun.
Grade 8 Trip To NaDEET
By Scarlett
From the 14th of September to the 18th of September, the Grade 8 students at WIS took a trip to NaDEET. NaDEET is located in the NamibRand Nature Reserve in the Namib Desert. The NaDEET centre was created to practise more sustainable ways to do basic human tasks.
When we were at NaDEET, we did different activities and tasks to learn more about being sustainable. These activities included things like solar cooking, water management, electricity management and proper recycling of waste. Due to these activities, we learned not only how to do these tasks but also why doing these tasks is beneficial for the environment and for many generations to come. While at NADEET we also did other activities such as dune boarding, nature walks, looking at the stars, team building games and much more.
Overall it was an amazing trip that we will remember for a long time to come. We would like to give a huge thank you to all of the teachers who came with us on the trip and Ms Lian for organizing this wonderful trip. We would also like to thank the NaDEET staff for taking their time to educate us on their work at NaDEET.
