Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?
I am from South Africa and have been teaching internationally since 2008. I am passionate about history and find people fascinating. Traveling and exploring new places is something I thoroughly enjoy. I'm passionate about community service and enjoy actively participating in the community, providing help where it's needed.
Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?
Prioritizing the students' well-being holds significant importance in my approach to education. Establishing a secure environment, characterized by respect and kindness, is fundamental to my educational philosophy. I find joy in encouraging and inspiring students to reach their full potential. Additionally, I strongly advocate for incorporating humor into the classroom, as I believe it fosters a positive atmosphere, promoting relaxation and openness to the learning process. I am also convinced that passionate teachers who share their enthusiasm for the subject contribute immensely to the student's engagement and understanding.
People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?
I earned my Bachelor of Arts, BA Hons, and master’s in history at Stellenbosch University and completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of South Africa. Throughout my career, I've taught students ranging from kindergarten to Grade 12. Internationally, I've had teaching experiences in Taiwan, Turkey, Tanzania (UWCEA), and Dubai. My teaching subjects have primarily been English and History. In my most recent position at GEMS World Academy in Dubai, I instructed DP English Language and Literature, DP Global Politics, MYP Humanities, as well as DP Self-Taught.
What do you do when you aren't teaching?
I love reading, baking, and watching foreign films. I am passionate about nature and love going on game drives and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.
Why did you choose WIS?
I have always wanted to live in Namibia and after researching the school I knew that this would be the perfect place for me.
Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
My favorite quote is from Nelson Mandela: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
