Meet Iqbal Sikandar our new and incoming DP Biology and MYP Integrated Sciences Teacher starting in August 2025

Welcome to WIS! What would you like us to know about you?

I’m Iqbal, an international educator with a passion for science, technology, and lifelong learning. With over 24 years of teaching experience across multiple countries, My journey as an educator has taken me from the Maldives to Yemen, Myanmar, Tanzania, Qatar, Indonesia, and now, to the vibrant learning community at WIS. I believe in fostering curiosity and empowering students to take charge of their own learning.

Could you tell us a little about your philosophy of education?I believe education should prepare students not just for exams but for life. My philosophy revolves around student-centered learning, problem-solving, and developing critical thinking skills. As the saying goes, "Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will never forget." I strive to create learning experiences that actively engage students, allowing them to take ownership of their learning through hands-on activities and collaboration. Learning should be interactive and meaningful—whether inside or outside the classroom. 

People often like to know their teacher’s academic background and professional experiences. What and where have you studied? Where have you worked?I hold a Master’s in Zoology and a Master’s in Multi-Disciplinary Studies in Education from the State University of New York (SUNY). Additionally, I earned a B.Ed. in Biology and Chemistry and have completed professional training in IBDP Biology and MYP Science.  

I have taught in international schools across the Maldives, Yemen, Myanmar, Tanzania, Qatar, and Indonesia. My roles have included Head of Science, IBDP Biology teacher, Chemistry teacher, and IB examiner. 

What do you do when you aren't teaching?When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll probably find me on the tennis court, swimming, or playing badminton. I also enjoy hiking and staying active. Technology is another passion of mine—I love exploring how it can enhance education, and I’ve even introduced a Makers Club at my previous school, where students built projects from scratch with minimal guidance.

Why did you choose WIS?I was drawn to WIS because of its commitment to inquiry-based learning and the IB philosophy. The emphasis on student agency, innovation, and international-mindedness aligns perfectly with my teaching approach. I’m excited to collaborate with a community of passionate educators and students who are eager to explore, challenge themselves, and grow.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?

I see myself as both a teacher and a lifelong learner. I am always seeking ways to improve my teaching, integrate technology effectively, and create meaningful learning experiences. I look forward to becoming a part of the WIS community, sharing my knowledge, and learning from everyone around me. Let’s make science exciting together!
