Lessons in the Kalahari: Grade 7 Visit to Kuzikus Reserve
Over the last 2 weeks, grade 7A and 7B went to Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve, which is located on the edge of the Kalahari. Kuzikus mainly focuses on the studying and conserving of black rhinos. Kuzikus contains over 2000 species of wildlife, which gave us students a great opportunity to learn about them and improve our knowledge on environmental conservation.
Our field trip was an amazing experience to learn about the unknown facts of the Kalahari. From learning how to track rhinos and other animals to learning how flora and fauna survive in such dry conditions. Also learning how the San people survived. We also learned about scorpions and how to find them. One highlight from the camp was getting to see two black rhinos, which we tracked on foot. What made this moment so special is knowing that black rhinos are an endangered species so the chances of seeing one are very thin.
Of course, this field trip couldn't have been possible without the help of our teachers and the staff at Kuzikus. We want to thank Mr. Benedict, Ms. Deidre, Mr. Marc, Ms. Sharon, Ms. Lian and Ms. Kate for making this trip possible, along with the staff from Kuzikus. If it wasn't for them, the grade 7 classes wouldn't have known this much about outdoor education and how important it really is to us.
Although the 2 grade 7 classes went on 2 separate weeks, we all agree that we have positive remarks and memories of the Kuzikus field trip.
