Grade 6 excursion, Hooves & Gardens
On the 7th of March 2025, the grade 6 German foreign language class left WIS to visit Hooves & Gardens. On the way, we listened to German music and practiced for our challenge of the day: ordering food and drinks in German!
At Hooves & Gardens, we played on the jungle gym before ordering. We could choose between “Toasty und Pommes” (toasty & chips) or “Waffeln mit Sirup” (waffles with syrup), as well as drinks – all in German. At first, it was a bit challenging, but the staff was very kind and helpful. Once we started, it felt great to use what we had learned in class!
After ordering, we got a tour of the farm in German and saw many “Bauernhoftiere” (farm animals) like turkeys, chickens, sheep, cows, goats, peacocks, bunnies, and even a baby oryx. Then, we enjoyed our food – the chips and waffles were delicious!
This was a great experience, and I would love to go back. With a little more practice, I think I could even order on my own at another German restaurant!

Das klingt nach einer tollen Erfahrung! Es ist wirklich beeindruckend, wie die Schüler durch praktische Anwendungen wie das Bestellen von Essen in Deutsch ihr Selbstvertrauen stärken konnten. Solche Ausflüge sind nicht nur lehrreich, sondern machen das Lernen auch viel spannender. Ich denke, es ist eine großartige Idee, solche Erlebnisse zu nutzen, um die Sprache in realen Situationen zu üben. Vielleicht könnte ich einige Ideen für ähnliche Aktivitäten auf GWYF Guide finden, um die Sprachkenntnisse weiter zu fördern!
That sounds like a fun way to practice German outside the classroom. I always find that using a language in real situations helps build confidence, and reading about this made me smile while taking a quick break with an FNF game.
