Celebrating 30 Years of Service to WIS: Ms Virginia and Ms Sigrid

This week marks the 30 year anniversary of Windhoek International School employment for our longest serving staff members, Ms Virginia Uapunduka and Ms Sigrid Ndadi.

Ms Sigrid, who has served as an Educational Assistant and in the Art Department for many years prior to moving into her current role as Grade 11 and 12 Student Commons Supervisor,  remarked, “Everywhere I go, I see my former students. Sometimes they are married and have kids of their own. Sometimes they come up to give me a hug. Being at WIS for these many years has been a work of love. This is a school characterised by love and compassion.”

Ms Virginia, who has served as an Educational Assistant across a variety of roles in the school and presently with the Kindergarten, shared a letter to parents, students, and staff: “Throughout the years, I have had the joy of watching generations of students grow, learn, and thrive, not just academically, but as compassionate, open-minded individuals. The diversity of our school community has always been a source of inspiration to me–witnessing students and colleagues from all over the world come together to share ideas, experiences, and perspectives has enriched my life in ways words cannot fully capture.”

WIS Director Ethan Van Drunen thanked Ms Virginia and Ms Sigrid for their years of service, quoting a favourite educator: “As Ngugi wa Thiong’o once put it, ‘Education is the light of our being, and those who nurture it are the keepers of our future.’ Your work of light and love at WIS now enters a fourth decade, and you can look around to see that your legacy is already here now: it is our school. In your respective roles and ways, Ms Virginia and Ms Sigrid, you have been a light for so many over the years—you have been keepers of the WIS mission.”

The staff gathered on Friday morning to share their congratulations for this joyful and remarkable milestone. A letter from Ms Virginia Uapunduka to the WIS students, parents, and staff is linked here
